Abstract

This study examines how representations of women are constructed in fashion brands’ Instagram posts within the context of digital visual culture. Grounded in feminist visual culture theory, the research particularly draws on Laura Mulvey’s concept of the “gaze” and contemporary feminist debates on visual representation to analyse how the female body, identity, and gender performance are visually coded. This theoretical framework is used to assess whether women are positioned as active subjects or as objects of the gaze. The sample consists of 15 images selected from the official Instagram accounts of Zara, Mudo, and H&M, three fashion brands with high digital visibility in Türkiye, posted between January 2025 and March 2026. The brands were selected through purposive sampling. The images were analysed according to categories including body type, posing, camera angle, facial expression, and spatial context, while the findings were quantitatively assessed through frequency calculations. The findings indicate that 11 of the 15 images present women in accordance with a thin and tall body ideal. In 8 images, the models are positioned passively or as subjects to be viewed, while in 10 images, camera positioning places the body at the visual centre. Minimal or neutral spatial settings are used in 12 images, further emphasizing the body as the primary visual focus. In contrast, 3 images include alternative forms of representation through stronger postures, active gazes, and relatively diverse body types. The study demonstrates that digital fashion imagery contributes to the reproduction of gendered and aesthetic norms. Feminist visual culture theory provides an effective analytical framework for examining power relations and gender performances embedded in these representations. The findings suggest that representations of women in digital fashion imagery should be addressed through more ethical and inclusive approaches in academic research, design, and media production
